I am a yoga teacher and relentless seeker of all things real, truth-telling, heart-exposing and destination-bound. I'm all about demystifying the yoga path, stripping it of it's modern-day pretense, and bringing it back to the bare essentials: a return to yourself and what lights you up inside. I am here to help you re-align with that light and make empowered choices in support of your authentic self and the life you’ve always wanted.
Yoga is a tool for transformation that really changes you. And I know this because I’ve experienced it for myself. I went from an anxiety-ridden, overworked and spiritually-depleted young woman just served a cancer diagnosis at age 24, to a strong, vibrant woman of purpose who transformed her relationship to fear, found her voice, knows her truth and finds her deepest joy in helping others find theirs.
I also believe that travel is the greatest teacher in life and it is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer. I am dedicated to offering creative and globally responsible yoga retreat experiences in locations that both challenge and inspire you. Expect to be fully supported as you stretch outside your comfort zone. That's where the magic happens.
Yoga has supported and expanded the creative vision for my life. The more intimate I grow with this practice, the more I realize how little I actually know of it. But these are a few gems I’ve gleaned along the way:
In fact, yoga gives you the permission to stop posing. To stop bending for the approval of others and to show up, fully present, as you are. The truth is, the pose isn’t a pose. It’s an invitation to experience your authentic self.
Rather, yoga asks the right questions to help you find your truth, your answers. Uniting with our highest self is not a religious process but rather a path that unfolds through experiential self-study.
Yoga invites you to a life beyond identifying with stories of your limitations. Through the tools and techniques of yoga, you can realize your limitless potential and create a life you love.
Over at my blog, I will share yoga + travel inspiration as well as personal reflections on my yoga experiences, spiritual encounters and the realness of everyday life. This is also where you'll likely grow tired of me gush about my obsession with India, my hopeless coffee addiction and my fiery stance against dogma and all things exclusive in the yoga world. The truth is I'm a chronic rule breaker. I devour stories of emancipation and will always encourage you to rise above the rules and go your own way. It is my hope that, through this blog, I can be a voice of support and inspiration to you as you travel towards optimized health + healing, brave vulnerability, authentic expression, personal truth, radical self-care and all the beautiful places in life that scare you.
If I can be of any extra support to your endeavors, or you'd simply like to connect and chat, please do not hesitate to contact me directly and begin a conversation. I would love to hear from you.
There are many paths to the summit. Yoga is the vehicle. You are the teacher. Consider me a guide.
To your light,
Jessica Roodvoets received her 200-hour yoga teacher certification in Ashtanga Vinyasa in 2012, at Seva Yoga in East Grand Rapids. During her training, she was diagnosed and treated for thyroid cancer and was inspired to study how to use yoga therapeutically for healing purposes. In August 2012, she attended the Professional Yoga Therapist Certification program through Integrative Yoga Therapy at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. She is currently pursuing her 500-hour certification in Advanced Studies in Traditional Hatha Yoga with Senior Prajna Yoga and Insight Yoga Teacher, Theresa Murphy. She has also developed her interests in Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Ayurveda and Yoga Nidra.
Jessica leads classes, seminars and workshops in the Grand Rapids area and yoga retreats abroad. Yoga and travel have been the most profound teachers in life. During a recent excursion to India, she was deeply moved by the warmth and unity of the people and was inspired to recommit to a yoga more about living than posing.
Life is always in the wild. It is inherently insecure. It is always unknown. We can spend our life minimizing risk, appeasing fear, and accumulating comfort in resistance to life’s innate insecurity, or we can go all in. We can take the invitation to step toward the mysterious; to take heart, take a risk; and open ourselves to receive the boundless beauty of this world. Moving deeper into the unknown is not only alluring and exciting, but it is the only way to live a truly vital, truly honest, and truly radiant life.
No matter how much we plan our travel in this life, the unknown is always our destination. And no other destination on on earth illuminates this more than sacred, wild and mysterious India. Join me for a week-long journey into yoga and creative possibility in one of the most vibrantly alive places on earth. This yoga retreat will take place at Dunes Holiday Resort situated near the pristine beaches and backwaters of North Goa.
Release your burdens and relax deeply into the unknown. Join me for seven days of twice-daily yoga and meditation, organic vegetarian meals and beach tranquility in one of the most colorful and spiritually diverse places on earth!
When we set out with a sacred intention or inquiry, when we journey to sacred sites or walk in the footsteps of holy people — something happens. These sacred sites and holy lands exert their magic on us, and somewhere along the journey, we find immense peace and solutions to some of our deepest queries. We realize, experientially, that the best, most reliable and divine destination to arrive at lies within ourselves.
Join me for this 10-day, yoga-inspired exploration into the art of sacred travel — in my favorite place of all: South India! nothing holds the heart quite like South India. Think luminescent rice paddies, fragrant spice gardens, thick coconut groves, silken sand, gently crashing waves, and hot pink sunsets — this as the background to the sacred World Heritage sites, ancient native arts, and mind-blowing temple architecture that gives South India its abundance of interest and charm. For this particular journey to the South, we’ll be exploring the beautiful provinces of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
